2. Kurz gesagt

5. Speicherung in deinem Browser (keine Cookies)

Wer den Link erhält, sieht, was darin steht.

2. In short

  • You can use the app without an account. An account (signing in with Google) is optional and only needed if you want to sync lists, notes and settings across devices.
  • We use no cookies, no analytics or tracking tools and no advertising.
  • Without an account your stars, lists, notes and settings stay in your browser on your device and are not sent to us. With an account they are also stored in our database (section 9).
  • Data reaches us only if you yourself send a problem report, confirm “Closed?” or email us (section 8), create an account (sections 9 and 10) or vote online with friends (section 11).

3. Visiting the page (hosting)

The page is served through Cloudflare (Cloudflare, Inc., USA). When you visit, Cloudflare processes technically necessary connection data, in particular your IP address, date and time, the file requested, browser details and information about the security of the connection (server log files), and forwards the request through its worldwide network to a nearby location. We have only limited access to these logs.

Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in secure, stable operation). Data may be transferred to the USA. Cloudflare, Inc. is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework; the basis is the European Commission's adequacy decision of 10 July 2023 (Art. 45 GDPR). Should the certification lapse, Cloudflare states that it relies on the EU standard contractual clauses (Art. 46 GDPR).

Fonts, icons and the map library are served from our own site; no fonts or scripts are loaded from Google or content networks.

4. Map images (OpenStreetMap)

For the map images your browser loads tiles from tile.openstreetmap.org (OpenStreetMap Foundation, United Kingdom). The provider technically receives your IP address, browser details and the tiles requested, from which the map area you look at can be inferred.

Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in showing a working map). The place data itself (name, location, opening hours) is included in the app; opening the page does not query OpenStreetMap for it.

5. Storage in your browser (no cookies)

The app stores data in your browser’s local storage so it works as you expect: your stars, excluded, “been here” and hidden places; your lists (names you choose and saved places); your private notes and star ratings (free text you type yourself); settings (language, colour, venue types, radius, filters); the map position you last viewed and a drawn search area; flags such as “welcome seen”; and a random identifier of your browser, which is only sent when you report a problem (section 8) or vote online (section 11), and, while you are signed in, a sign-in token so that you stay signed in. The app also keeps copies of its own site files in the browser so it works offline (no personal data, no map images).

Without an account this data does not leave your device. Please do not write other people’s private data into notes or lists. You can delete everything at any time by clearing the site data in your browser; your notes are then gone too. Legal basis for accessing your device: Section 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG (strictly necessary to provide the function you asked for).

6. Location

If you tap “Use my location”, your browser asks for permission. Your location is used only inside your browser to centre the map. It is not sent to us and not stored. When map tiles are loaded (section 4), the map area you view is visible to the map provider.

7. Links to other sites

The links “Reviews & photos”, “Directions”, “Open in Google Maps”, a venue’s website or phone number, and links to OpenStreetMap open external sites or apps. You leave our app only when you tap them; the privacy policy of that provider then applies. For Google Maps, the venue’s name and location are passed on, not your location.

8. “Report a problem”, “Closed?” and email

Report a problem: When you tap “Report a problem” on a place, you choose what is wrong, add details, and can optionally enter your email address if you would like a reply. What is stored: the place’s name, address and identifier (data from OpenStreetMap), your reason and free text, the optional email address, a random identifier of your browser (the account identifier if you are signed in), the time and the processing status. The data is kept in our database at Supabase (section 9); only we can see it. You can see your own reports with their status and our reply under “My reports”. We use them to check and correct the data, and the email address only for questions about your report. Please do not enter other personal data in the free text. Only a few reports per browser are possible per day (protection against misuse).

Legal bases: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in improving data quality); for the optional email address Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR (consent by entering it, revocable at any time). Retention: we delete reports 12 months after they are resolved; an email address you give is deleted once you have received a reply or the report is resolved.

“Closed?”: When you tap “Closed?” on a place, we ask first. Only when you confirm does the app hide the place for you and store a short “closed for good” report in the same database, with the place’s name, address and identifier and the random identifier of your browser. We check every report by hand; nothing is hidden automatically for other users. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. Retention as for reports.

Email: If you email us, we process your address and message only to reply (Art. 6(1)(b) or (f) GDPR). Our mailbox is run through Google Mail (Google Ireland Limited, Ireland / Google LLC, USA); Google processes the emails there under its own terms. Retention: 12 months after the enquiry is closed.

9. Account and sync (optional)

You can create an account to sync your stars, excluded, visited and hidden places, your lists, your private notes and star ratings, and your settings (language, colour, filters) across devices. Without an account the app works fully; all of this data then stays on your device (section 5).

What data: When you sign in we store your email address and the identifier of your Google account, plus the name and profile picture address Google passes to the sign-in service (we do not use name or picture). On top of that comes the content you sync, as one record that only you can read and change. Notes are free text you enter yourself; please do not put other people’s data in them.

Where and by whom: The data is kept in a database run by Supabase (Supabase, Inc., USA) in a data centre in Frankfurt am Main (EU). Supabase processes it on our behalf under a data processing agreement (Data Processing Addendum) that is part of Supabase’s terms and contains EU standard contractual clauses for possible access from the USA (Art. 28, 46 GDPR).

Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (providing the account and sync function you asked for).

Retention and deletion: until you delete your account. In the app, under “Account”, you can download all your data or delete your account together with all synced data at any time. Reports you already sent are kept without any link to you. On plans with automatic backups, the provider may keep deleted data in backups for a few more days (currently 7 to 14 days depending on the plan).

10. Signing in with Google

You sign in with “Continue with Google”. The app then redirects you to Google. Google learns that you are signing in to “Where to eat?” and processes your data under its own privacy policy (Google Ireland Limited, Ireland, or Google LLC, USA). From Google we receive only your email address, your name, your profile picture and an identifier, no password. Signing in is optional; without it you use the app as before. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR. Google LLC is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework; failing that, Google uses standard contractual clauses.

Signing in by emailed link is not available at the moment.

11. Voting with friends (online)

When you vote with friends on separate devices, the app creates a “room” with a code. What is stored: the places put to the vote, a random identifier of your browser, the name you type in yourself, and your answers (Yes / Maybe / No). Anyone who has the link or code can vote and can see the participants’ names and answers, so please use a nickname only. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR. Rooms are deleted after 14 days. Supabase is our processor here as well (section 9).

12. Sharing

Links you share (a search or a chosen place) carry their content after a “#” in the link. Your browser does not send that part to the server. Whoever receives the link sees what is in it. Sharing happens only when you trigger it (your device’s share menu or copying the link).

16. Other

There is no automated decision-making, including profiling. Providing data is voluntary; without a report, no data is sent to us. The app contains prepared online functions (accounts, voting via link) that are currently switched off. Before they are switched on we will extend this notice. We may update it when the app changes; the version published here applies.
